Charity auctions are one of the most fun ways to raise money for your charity. It can be difficult to know where to start, so here are some tips for organizing a fun and successful charity auction.

Create a Committee and Find Items for Auction

The first step is to create an auction committee, ideally comprised of at least 10 people, who will help put together all of the elements of the auction. The most important task the committee will perform is finding and deciding on which items will be up for auction. It is a good idea to set a theme for the charity auction and frame items around it. Try to make the items unique so people are more motivated to bid for them.

Venue, Layout and Entertainment

These three components are important to make the charity auction memorable. You want to choose an enticing location that accommodates the attendees. Some venues will provide rental discounts to charities. Once you have the venue, plan the layout of the auction event so people can easily browse items, grab food or drinks, visit with other tables and be part of the live auction no matter where they are. It’s also a good idea to choose entertainment outside of food and the live auction to keep spirits high and people entertained.

Hold a Silent Auction and a Live Auction

Some charities prefer one or the other, but to increase donations it is a good to offer two types of auctions – silent and live. A silent auction should be comprised of smaller items that people feel comfortable bidding on. The live auction should be big ticket, appealing packages that a live auctioneer can really amp up excitement on.

Spread the Word

Create an event marketing plan with your committee to spread the word about the charity auction. The members of the committee can help with word of mouth marketing, especially if they are influential. Have everyone call their contacts to see if they can come or help out with telling people about the auction. You can also seek out a marketing firm who specializes in nonprofit marketing to get the word out. The more people who know about the auction, the better chance you have at raising more money for the charity.
